Domaine De Fa 2015 Saint-Amour: Not the Classic Gamay

A few days a go I went with some friends to Vins Urbains, a wine bar in central Bordeaux focusing on organic and biodynamic wines. I was looking for a light to medium bodied red. So the owner told me about various Beaujoulais and he recommended a fairly rich and complex Saint-Amour from a small biodynamic estate, Domaine De Fa, owned by Antoine and Maxime Graillot, whose main estate is in Crozes Hermitage. The vintage 2015 was very warm, so this gamay gave notes of ripe black cherry, black pepper and liquorice. Aromas more typical of syrah: it had nothing to do with the classic and light beaujolais with floral and red fruits hints. The wine was decanted and it was smooth and round, with a very good persistency in the mouth. Great when paired with cheese and cured meats, this was great discovery for me and a good bargain for around 35 euros in the wine bar. Highly recommended.
